AN INTRODUCTION TO TRADITIONAL
HARP PLAYING –
Advanced – E+M

TrionaMarshall

TUTOR : TRIONA MARSHALL
This class is specifically designed for experienced players with a classical background who want to explore traditional music. We will learn traditional Irish tunes, discuss their stylistic idioms, examine the possibilities for ornamentation and consider the vast range of options for accompaniments. One of the goals in this class is to encourage players who have relied exclusively on written music as their guideline to explore and discover their own preferences and creativity within the context of traditional music. The most important goal in all this is to imbue participants with the knowledge and confidence to use this different approach to enhance their own music.

TUTOR : CORRINA HEWAT
This class is a follow-on from last year's starter course, for those who feel out of their depth in a session environment. We'll learn how to recognise different types of tunes, different keys and time signatures by ear, and learn the ways to work around them. This class will be taught at a slow, comfortable pace! You will also learn how to pick up a tune quickly by ear, with some tricks of the trade to incorporate into your playing which will ensure you always sound like you know what you are doing! The class will be predominantly taught by ear, although notes will be available to take away each day.

PLAYING DANCE MUSIC ON THE HARP
Intermediate – E+M

PaulDooley

TUTOR : PAUL DOOLEY
Playing traditional Irish dance music on the harp can sometimes be difficult; this music is usually composed and played on other instruments such as pipes, fiddles or flutes and these are completely different to a harp in almost every way. This class will be looking at the issues involved in adapting this music to the harp, concentrating on ornamentation, rhythm and most importantly, on preserving the original flavour of the music in the process. The class will be taught on a metal-strung harp but all harps are welcome.
