HARMONY SINGING

CorrinaHewat2

TUTOR : CORRINA HEWAT
A fun and energising workshop designed for all of you who need an hour of vocal joy in the middle of the day. No need for harps, just a smile and a voice! This workshop is for everyone who fancies singing through a few songs chosen from Scotland and beyond (words provided to take away) then playing around with them using a mix of harmonies, rhythms and wordplay.

Monday
11.15am / W14

HOME AND AWAY :
A Participatory Workshop for Both Gut & Wire-String Harps

BillTaylor

TUTOR : BILL TAYLOR
Binary notation, using the symbols I and O to indicate contrasting moments of tension and resolution, was used by medieval Welsh harpers for composing music, and has recently been found on a mid-16th century carved portrait head at Stirling Castle. But alternating sonorities between resolution (home) and tension (away) are also very much a part of traditional Scottish music. Students are asked to bring their harps to this workshop, which explores the music found on the Stirling head, as well as other traditional pieces composed in a similar manner.

Tuesday
11.15am / W15

A GAELIC SONG WORKSHOP

MaggieMacInnes

TUTOR : MAGGIE MACINNES
Maggie will teach some songs as well as giving an insight into the Gaelic oral tradition and her own family tradition. No prior knowledge of Gaelic will be needed and phonetics will be provided for those that require them. Contrasting songs will be looked at and Maggie will also discuss her approach to accompaniment of these songs on the clarsach.

Tuesday
11.15am / W16

BRETON DANCES

TristanLeGovic

TUTOR : TRISTAN LE GOVIC
After his first appearance at the Harp Festival in 2008, Tristan is returning to teach more dances from his native Brittany. During this convivial and lively time you will learn the main Breton dances. If you are a musician, it will help you to understand how to perform tunes; otherwise, just come along and enjoy the exceptional feeling of a group dancing together. Beginners, intermediate and advanced levels all welcome.

Tuesday
11.15am / W17

BLUES

ParkStickney

TUTOR : PARK STICKNEY
This Blues Workshop will be, at least briefly, the largest all-harp jazz/blues ensemble in Edinburgh! Everyone is welcome to attend, learn the basic blues form (and some variations so we don't go mad), a theme or two, and some "cheap but effective" improvisational tools.

WEDNESDAY 14 APRIL

Wednesday
11.15am / W18

STEP DANCING

MairiCampbell

TUTOR : MAIRI CAMPBELL
Ever wanted to do more than just tap your feet? Here Mairi will show you a few rhythms that you can easily use to accompany tunes. Learn some of the history of this old form of dancing. Wear comfy clothing and hard soled shoes if possible.
