T2 - EASY SCOTTISH FOR ADULTS - Elementary /

Learn some lovely simple Scottish tunes, all arranged with the aim of
gently encouraging the musician out of the learner. Taught in the
traditional way by ear with music provided at the end of each day.
T3 - ARPA LLANERA – Elementary / DIEGO LAVERDE

This class will introduce students to the harp playing styles of Latin
America, in particular of Colombia and Venezuela. The basic skills for
understanding rhythm and melody will be taught, allowing students to
incorporate rich and creative elements into their harp playing and/or to
extend their musical repertoire.
Teaching will be largely by ear but music notation will be given at the
end of each day.
T4 - FINDING THE LOST CHORD! - Elementary+Intermediate /

The ideal class if you want to start arranging music for yourself. Set
at an easy pace, you will discover how to find the right chord to go
with the notes in the melody and also different ways of playing them. If
you don’t know your diminished from your dominant, then this is the
class for you! Please bring a pencil, rubber, notebook and manuscript
paper.
T5 - SCOTTISH TUNES – Intermediate / CORRINA

The tunes will be simple beautiful Scottish melodies and the
arrangements will be adaptable to suit all intermediate standards. Some
defined technique work each day and some fun exercises will make this
course an enjoyable and rewarding one to attend. Teaching will be
largely by ear but music will be given at the end of each day.
T6 - IRISH DANCE TUNES – Advanced / GRÁINNE

Learn to play a variety of Irish dance tunes, including jigs, reels and
hornpipes. Emphasis will be on exploring different types of
ornamentation and melodic variation used in Irish traditional music and
on creating interesting and varied arrangements. Teaching will be by
ear, with music provided at the end of the course. Participants are
encouraged to bring a recording device.
T7 - EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE POTENTIAL – advanced /
SAVOURNA STEVENSON
Be encouraged and inspired by one of Scotland's finest harpist/composers
who is known for her outstanding contribution to contemporary harp
repertoire. Savourna will lead and encourage you to develop your
creative abilities within a wide range of musical styles: developing
your playing technique and experimenting with exciting new harp
techniques - sharing and developing creative ideas through tuition,
group work and improvisation sessions.

friend (and their harp)! Experience a wide range of pieces and styles
including traditional Celtic music, classical, romantic and favourite

In this class, Isabelle invites students to bring along work in
progress. You will have the opportunity to work in depth on problem
passages and technical details that will help you gain
a fuller understanding of the music.

Have you always dreamed of playing a harp? Then this is the class for
you to have a go. You will be taught the essentials of good basic
technique, some simple chords as a means of accompaniment and you will
leave with the ability to play some simple harp pieces.
T11-SCOTTISH TUNES FOR CHILDREN - Elementary /

This course will give you the opportunity to learn simple Scottish tunes
suitable for playing solo and/or playing with others. Basic left–hand
accompaniments will also be covered. The ability to read music is not
essential, as classes will be taught by ear with music provided for
those who prefer it.
T12 - TECHNIQUE - Elementary / PATSY SEDDON

A class for those wishing to polish and strengthen their technique using
elements of Scottish Harp playing and discovering tunes that incorporate
them. Ideal for those players who do not receive regular tuition and for
those who do but want some help or alternative ideas.
T13 - “JAZZ HARP – A 1/2 STEP AT A TIME” – elementary /

T14 - SCANDINAVIAN MODES, MOODS+MELODIES – Intermediate /

airs. What are modes? Which modes are used in Swedish and Norwegian
music, and why? Susan integrates theory, accompaniment patterns and

Ruth’s class will be an opportunity to explore the vast timbral
possibilities of the harp and unleash your personal creativity. A chance
to explore new rhythms and sounds, work with other harpists and compose

of Jewish music and add passion and flair to your repertoire. Discover

Hassidic (Eastern European) and modern Israeli traditions.

T18 - PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE – Mixed Abilities /

In a repeat of last year’s popular format, students will again have the
opportunity to rehearse specially arranged or composed music with other
instrumentalists. This “Festival Orchestra” together with the Scottish
Harp Orchestra, na Clarsairean, will join Mil ha ur Gorden from Brittany
and the Kylemore Harp Ensemble from Dublin in concert on Wednesday
afternoon.
NB. Music will be sent in advance to students who should learn the notes
before attending.

T23 - WORLD MUSIC AND SONG – Elementary + Intermediate /

Students will learn new and interesting repertoire and create their own
harp accompaniments for music and songs from around the world including
Russia, Japan, Costa Rica and Europe. The class will concentrate on the
musical "style" of each country and on translating that style to suit
the harp. It is not necessary to read music, but those who can, will be
given copies of Margaret's arrangements.
T24 - IRISH MUSIC, PAST AND PRESENT: Intermediate /

This class will take a look at the broad spectrum of music, which makes
up the Irish harp tradition, from the music of 17th and 18th century
harper composers to the lively dance music commonly played on the Irish
harp today. Ornamentation commonly used in Irish music will also be
covered. Teaching will be by ear, with written music provided at the end
of the course. Participants are encouraged to bring a recording device.

T27 - THE CALEDONIAN WIRE-STRUNG HARP - / mixed /

Concentrating on the techniques, ornamentation and musical expression of
the wire-strung harp, Javier will teach this course largely with tunes
and short études related to the technical aspects of the music. He will
demonstrate the need for musical expression in order to bring the music
alive.
It is essential that pupils are able to read music.
T28 - GAELIC THROUGH SONG – mixed /

Come and learn some Gaelic through the medium of song. We will take a
good bite at it rather than have a taste! Bring your harps too so that
we can create accompaniments to the songs. You only need knowledge of
basic chords, a good pair of ears and a pinch of bravado! Tiugainn!

T31 – WEEKEND: THE EARLY HARP AND ITS REPERTOIRE FROM 1500-1700
Intermediate + Advanced / SARAH RIDY

An exploration of historical harps, focusing mainly on repertoire of the
Baroque period. Discover what was intended for performance on early
harps and learn about the many different styles, including
improvisation, figured bass and solo repertoire from countries such as
England, Spain and Italy. Suitable for all harps.
T32 - TECHNIQUE - Intermediate and advanced /
HELEN MACLEOD

One session per day: Saturday and Sunday at 9.15am
An ideal class for those who wish to improve their technique and sound
in order to become a stronger player. Although this is a technique
class, scales and studies will not be the only criteria – we will also
look at music that incorporates more advanced techniques. Taught by ear
and with music. NB Suitable for pedal harps and clarsachs with
28-36strings only.
T33 – 3 DAY COURSE: CLASSICAL MUSIC for LEVER HARP –
Intermediate/Advanced / MARGARET KNIGHT

One session per day: Monday to Wednesday at 9.15am
Classical music, from ancient to modern, suitable for transcription to
lever harp. A guide to creating your own lever arrangements of classical
pieces from the original piano or other instrument scores. The ability
to read music will be helpful but not essential.
T34 - 3 DAY COURSE: SCOTS AIRS
Elementary / intermediate / MARIE-LOUISE NAPIER

One session per day: Monday to Wednesday at 1.00pm
Come along and wrap your fingers around some of our loveliest melodies.
We will take a look at Highland and Lowland tunes, a strathspey and a
song. Nothing too taxing! - and music will be given out at the end of
each class.

Come and hear the mellow sound of Bamboo Pipes, see the simple tools
used to make these instruments and then take the opportunity to ‘have a
go' playing the them. Further information on courses to make your own -
both UK and International - will also be provided.
T36 - COME AND TRY: MELODEON – PETE GRASSBY
Saturday at 4.30pm and/or Sunday at 9.15am
This class will receive a basic and fun introduction to the melodeon,
its different systems, styles, keys and usage. By the end of the class,
everyone should be able to play at least one tune - how basic or
advanced, may depend on the player’s aptitude for the melodeon. It is
not necessary to be able to read music - Pete doesn’t! Instruments
available needed.
T37 - COME AND TRY: WIRE STRUNG CLÀRSACH -
SIMON CHADWICK

Have you ever wondered what the clàrsach was like hundreds of years ago?
The early clàrsach is very different from the more familiar modern
instrument, having strings of metal instead of gut or nylon. Have a go
at playing one of our replica historical harps and find out about the
ancient clàrsach repertory and techniques. Harps provided. Suitable for
everyone.
