Heather Yule – Exploring ideas for accompanying the spoken word

    Sat, 10 April 2021 @ 4:00 pm Mon, 12 April 2021 @ 5:15 pm BST

Instrumental music, art and dance are all art forms that tell stories without words. Accompanying words – be it a song, a poem or a story – is just an extension of the many ways we strive to convey emotion and a sense of narrative when we play our harps. We will delve into interesting harp techniques and develop them into variations and motifs perfect for weaving with the spoken word. It is great fun to play around with language, rhythm, range, chord textures, tonality, dynamics and tempo of both the spoken word and the music. Often the simplest patterns and ideas are the most effective.

Bill Taylor – Music from the Rowallan Lute Book for Wire-strung Clarsach

    Sat, 10 April 2021 @ 10:00 am Sun, 11 April 2021 @ 5:15 pm BST

To a certain extent, players of harps and lutes shared a common repertoire across Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, and this was certainly the case in Scotland. The Rowallan Lute Book is the oldest source of Scottish lute music, dating c. 1612-18, and contains delightful Continental and Scottish tunes. We will explore playing several contrasting tunes using historical damping techniques. Some pieces are decidedly French; others are undoubtedly Scottish; some are reminiscent of the mysterious ‘ports’ found in other lute books. All sizes of wire-strung clarsach are welcome.
